Image Metadata: What to Check Before Sharing

A Filecozy guide1 min readUpdated:

An image can contain information beyond the visible picture. Learn what metadata may reveal, what removal changes, and how to check the file you share.

What metadata can contain

Depending on the camera, software, and file format, an image may contain camera settings, dates, orientation, location coordinates, or an embedded thumbnail. Not every image contains all of these fields.

Visible details are separate: a street sign, address, face, or document in the picture remains visible even after metadata is removed. A descriptive filename can also reveal information.

What Filecozy does

The metadata tool decodes the image and creates a new encoded image without copying embedded EXIF, GPS, IPTC, or XMP blocks. It does not simply delete a few bytes from the original file.

Re-encoding can change pixel values, colours, orientation, and file size, especially with lossy output. Compare the result and retain your original as a backup.

Verify the file you actually share

Inspect the downloaded file with a metadata viewer when a particular field must be absent. Do not assume that an ordinary compression operation removed it: lossless PNG optimization or keeping the original can retain metadata.

Applications can handle metadata differently. Check the final exported or downloaded version after editing elsewhere. Filecozy processes selected image files in your browser without uploading them to its server.
