Keep transparency while trying a lighter format

A transparent PNG logo or graphic can take up more space than expected. WebP supports transparency too, so you can try a different format without filling in the background. Pay attention to the artwork itself: a smaller file is only useful if the edges and colours still work.

  1. Choose a transparent PNG

Start with the original graphic and check that your destination accepts WebP. If exact pixel values matter for further editing, keep the PNG as your working file.

  2. Check small lettering and gradients

Adjust quality while inspecting thin strokes, shadows and colour transitions. A high quality setting is not a promise of lossless conversion.

  3. Preview it on its real background

Try the downloaded WebP against the page colour where it will appear. Pale outlines or rough transparent edges can be easier to see there than in an isolated preview.

PNG TO WEBP FAQ

Frequently asked questions about PNG to WebP

Learn what the settings do and what to check in the finished image.

Is this a lossless conversion?

Do not assume a pixel-identical result. The quality-controlled WebP output can change colour values. Keep PNG when exact pixel preservation is required.

What happens to a transparent background?

WebP supports an alpha channel, so the output can retain the transparent areas. Review the result in the application where you plan to use it.
