PRACTICAL STEPS

How to Reduce an Image File Size

A Filecozy guide1 min readUpdated:

If an image is too large to upload or share, check its dimensions, choose a suitable format, and adjust quality. Review the result at each step.

Read the upload requirements first

Find the accepted formats, maximum file size, and required dimensions. These are different requirements; a smaller file can still have the wrong width or height.

For example, a form may set a 200 KB limit without requiring a square photo. Treat that as a file size limit, not an instruction to crop the image.

Resize only when it helps

A large camera photo may contain more pixels than your destination needs. Reducing its dimensions can help reduce file size. Keep enough detail for the intended use.

With aspect ratio locked, Filecozy fits the image within the width and height you enter. It does not necessarily produce both exact dimensions. Crop first if a particular shape is required.

Compress, compare, and check the final file

Choose a supported format and begin with the default quality. Lower JPG or WebP quality gradually, checking important details. For PNG, try lossless optimization or colour reduction if acceptable.

The target-size tool searches quality levels but may not reach every limit. If the output is still too large, try smaller dimensions or another accepted format. Confirm the downloaded file size before uploading.
